Adaptive release

Adaptive release controls the release of content to users based on a set of rules you create. You can use two types of adaptive release:

Adaptive Release

With basic adaptive release, you can apply one rule to a content item. This rule can contain all four types of criteria, but not multiple instances of the same type. All criteria in the rule must be satisfied before the item is released. The more criteria you add to a rule, the more restrictions on the release of that item, making it more difficult for users to gain access.

Adaptive Release (Advanced)

Create sophisticated combinations of release rules by adding multiple rules with multiple criteria to a single content item. Users must meet all of the criteria of one of the rules to gain access.If you want to create different criteria for different users on the same item, more than one rule is needed. For example, you can set up a rule for Group Blue allowing users to view Test 1 after completing Assignment A. You can set up a separate rule for Group Red allowing them to see Test 1 after completing Assignment B.

How to Add a Basic Adaptive Release Rule

With basic adaptive release rules, you can add and edit one rule for a single piece of content. This single rule may have multiple criteria. For example, a rule can require a student to meet both date and review status criteria before the content is available. You can use advanced adaptive release rules to add multiple rules to a single piece of content. Change Edit Mode to ON to access the adaptive release options.

How to Add a Basic Adaptive Release Rule

  1. Access an item's contextual menu and click Adaptive Release.
  2. On the Adaptive Release page, complete one or more sections of the Adaptive Release page, such as date and membership.
  3. Click Submit.

How to Add an Advanced Adaptive Release Rule

With advanced adaptive release, you can add multiple rules to a single content item. If you create multiple rules, the content is visible to a user if any of the rules are met. Each rule may have multiple criteria. For example, one rule allows users in Group A with a score above an 85 on a test to view the content item. Another rule for the same item allows users in Group B to view the same content item only after a specific date. Rules that cannot be satisfied by any user will be noted because they will not provide any access to the specified content item.

How to Add an Advanced Adaptive Release Rule

  1. Access an item's contextual menu and click Adaptive Release: Advanced.
  2. On the Adaptive Release: Advanced page, click Create Rule on the action bar.
  3. On the Add Rule page, type a name for the rule and click Submit.
  4. Point to Create Criteria and select date, grade, or membership, and provide the criteria. Click Submit.
  5. On the action bar, click Review Status to add it to the advanced adaptive release rule. Browse and select the content item to be reviewed before the content is released.
  6. Repeat Steps 6 and 7 to add multiple criteria to an item.

About Adaptive Release Criteria

Criteria are the parts that define an adaptive release rule. You can apply one or more criterion to each rule. For example, one rule may make content available after a specific date, while another rule, with multiple criteria, may make content available to a course group after a specific date.

About Date Criteria

Use date criteria to keep students focused, and to control when content is released as the term progresses rather than releasing all course content at the beginning of the term. You can display content after a specific date, until a specific date, or within a time frame.

You can add more criteria to a rule, in addition to date criteria, to further narrow the availability of an item.

How to Add Date Criteria to a Rule

  1. Access an item's contextual menu and click Adaptive Release: Advanced.
  2. On the Adaptive Release: Advanced page, click Create Rule on the action bar.
  3. On the Add Rule page, type a name for the rule and click Submit.
  4. On the action bar, point to Create Criteria and click Date.
  5. On the Date page, make your date selections.
  6. Click Submit.

How to Add Membership Criteria to a Rule

About Membership Criteria

Use membership criteria to release content to specific users and course groups. You can make an item available to a course group -OR- make an item available to a course group and other specific users.

Make Content Available to Specific Users

A student requests to earn more points. You agree to add an extra credit assignment, but decide not to offer it to the rest of your students. You release it to the single student with a membership criterion.

Make Content Available to Groups

Your class is divided into three groups and each group has a different assignment. They are instructed to learn the topic and then present the material to the entire class. You provide materials specific to each group's assignment as content items. You release each content item to one group only.

When a group presents the material to the class, you may then change the release rule on that content item so that it becomes available to the entire class.

You can add more criteria to a rule, in addition to membership criteria, to further narrow the availability of an item.

Use the following steps to add membership criteria to an advanced adaptive release rule. You add the same basic information when creating a basic adaptive release rule.

How to Add Membership Criteria to a Rule

  1. Access an item's contextual menu and click Adaptive Release: Advanced.
  2. On the Adaptive Release: Advanced page, click Create Rule on the action bar.
  3. On the Add Rule page, type a name for the rule and click Submit.
  4. On the action bar, point to Create Criteria and click Membership.
  5. On the Membership page, make your selections:
    • In the Username box, type one or more usernames, separated by commas or click Browse to search the system.
    • All groups in the course appear in the Items to Select box, even those that are unavailable. Use the arrows to move groups from the Items to selectfield to the Selected Items field.
  6. Click Submit.

How to Add Grade Center Criteria to a Rule

About Grade Center Criteria

Use Grade Center criteria to release content based on item attempt, item score, or a calculated column.

Make Content Available Based on Grade Center Attempt

Use Grade Center criteria if you want to make content visibility dependent on attempts made by students on tests or assignments. You prepare a pretest for students to complete before review materials are made available. Students can discover which topics they need to study more.

Use attempt-based criterion for end-of-term surveys. Some institutions require that an end-of-term survey is attempted at least once before the final exam is made available.

Make Content Available Based on Grade Center Score or Calculated Column

Many courses rely on progression, where students must learn one topic before moving to another. If you want students to earn a passing grade on Assignment 1 before viewing the next chapter, you can add a Grade Center criterion.

You can also establish a range of values for content release, such as releasing an extra credit item to students who scored between 60 and 80, and releasing a different item with more intense remediation for students scoring below 60. In this example, you create two content items. Release one to students who fall into the 60–80 range and release the other to students who receive less than 60.

You can add more criteria to a rule, in addition to Grade Center criteria, to further narrow the availability of an item.

How to Add Grade Center Criteria to a Rule

Use the following steps to add Grade Center criteria to an advanced adaptive release rule. You add the same basic information when creating a basic adaptive release rule.

You can only select one Grade Center item for each Grade Center criterion. However, you may add multiple Grade Center criteria to a single advanced adaptive release rule. For example, within a single rule, you can specify a criterion that makes Project A available after Survey 1 is complete and another criterion that makes Project A available after a score greater than 70 on Test 2 is recorded. In this example, only students who have completed Survey 1 and scored higher than 70 on Test 2 may view Project A.

How to Add Grade Center Criteria to a Rule

  1. Access an item's contextual menu and click Adaptive Release: Advanced.
  2. On the Adaptive Release: Advanced page, click Create Rule on the action bar.
  3. On the Add Rule page, type a name for the rule and click Submit.
  4. On the action bar, point to Create Criteria and click Grade.
  5. On the Grade page, select the Grade Center item for this criterion. Grade Center items are listed by their categories, such as assignment or discussion. Possible points are also included to help you determine the score range.
  6. In the Select Condition drop-down list:
    • Select User has at least one attempt for this item to release the content based on a submitted attempt rather than the score achieved.
    • In the Score drop-down list, select Less Than, Greater Than, or Equal To. Type a numeric score in the box for the score threshold.
    • Select Score Between or Percent Between. Type the range of values in the boxes.

How to Add Review Status Criteria to a Rule

About Review Status Criteria

You can use review status criteria to release content based on a user’s review of a specific content item.

For example, you can create a criterion that makes Assignment 1 available only after students have marked Homework 1 as reviewed.

You can add more criteria to a rule, in addition to review status criteria, to further narrow the availability of an item.

You can apply review status to a learning module, but not to the individual files within a learning module.

How to Add Review Status Criteria to a Rule

  1. Access an item's contextual menu and click Adaptive Release: Advanced.
  2. On the Adaptive Release: Advanced page, click Create Rule in the action bar.
  3. On the Add Rule page, type a name for the rule and click Submit.
  4. On the action bar, click Review Status.
  5. On the Review Status page, click Browse to open the course map and select an item. Review status will be turned on for this item. Users must mark the item reviewed before the content is available.
